Oshawa Youth Council Information

Thank you for your interest in serving on the Oshawa Youth Council. Your participation will help give youth a voice in our City! What is the Oshawa Youth Council? The Oshawa Youth Council consists a committee of Youth who work together to address the recreation and leisure needs of youth in Oshawa. Youth representatives must be in grades 6-12 and a resident of Oshawa.

Youth Leaders:

  • Grades 6-9
  • Meetings will be held once a month, with some months having two meetings due to workshops
  • Youth leaders will have a vote on all matters/topics that arise
  • Provide insight as well as emerging trends affecting youth

Youth Mentors:

  • Grades 10-12
  • Youth Mentors will represent the interests of youth in Oshawa, to public and private stakeholders through various discussions regarding things such as relevant issues and/or recommendations
  • A member will be the supervisor/person in charge, they will be responsible for drafting the agenda for regular meetings

Our goals include:

  • Develop the Principles and Practices for the Oshawa Youth Council (O.Y.C.)
  • Youth development opportunities
  • Participation in the community
  • Event participation and volunteering
  • Education and awareness of youth issues
  • Create an inventory of Youth Services available in the Oshawa area;
  • Provide feedback to City of Oshawa staff with recommendations to increase youth voice
  • Communicate and coordinate events, services and initiatives available to Youth; Create action plans and prioritize future projects from feedback received by youth
  • Recruit new volunteers for the Youth Council
  • Have Fun!
  • Establish and maintain a youth council that builds youth capacity to participate in their community
  • To create a structure, which will contain decision-making processes for events like National Youth Week
  • To engage in various activities that will enable them to improve their well-being, socialization and leadership skills

Before you begin, please note:

  • Members must be Oshawa residents.
  • Currently in Grades 6 through 12 or 13-18 years of age
  • Involvement, such as attending meeting and event planning/participation, in the O.Y.C. is eligible for community volunteer hours.
  • Additional opportunities may be available to volunteer and/or take on additional tasks and may require additional time
  • All members must include a parent/guardian signature on application.
